Congratulations! You are about to graduate high school and
it is time to start applying for college or enter the workforce. Or maybe you
have been employed for a while but you are now wanting to find a new job or go
back to school. You want to make sure that you stand out in the pile of
candidates. Thankfully, we have put together these five tips to help ensure
your application or resume stands out among the rest!
– If you have your colleges picked out
already, do some research on them and see what they require for their
application process. If you know there is going to be an essay, you can go
ahead and start working on it or improving your essay writing skills. When it
comes to creating your resume, research the jobs you would like to have and
tailor your resume to each one. Make sure to put in any qualifications you may
have that are on the job posting in your resume. Also, research the company. If
you were to get called for an interview you will want to show you are interested
in the company and that you would be a good fit for them.
– If you already know which career
you would like to go into, take classes that can help get you there and to see
if you really enjoy it. If you are in high school, you can look to see if your
school offers any dual-credit classes or classes specific to what you want to
do. If you are not in school, there are many online classes you can take that
do not require you to be enrolled in a college. These can help you because you
can add them to your resume as experience and you can get a feel for that type of
work and see if you would enjoy it. You can also attend seminars and conferences on topics that you are interested in.
– Gaining experience by working
or completing internships in the field you would like to have a career in is
great for your resume or college application. Look around in your area and see
if you can find anything related to what you want to do in the future. If you
are unable to get a job in the field yet, look into job shadowing as well. Any
experience you can get is better than nothing. It can also help you determine
if you will enjoy the job and if it would be something you would like to have
as a career.
– Showing that you have
leadership experience is great to help boost your resume. If you were the
president of any clubs or organizations be sure to put that on your resume.
Also, any experience as a leader at work such as a team lead, supervisor or program/project
manager can show great leadership skills. Employers want to hire those who take
initiative and are hard workers.
– Volunteering always looks
great on a resume or college application. There are so many volunteer
activities you can do as well. Look around in your town and see what opportunities
there are such as the animal shelter, a soup kitchen, The Boys and Girls club,
coaching, Habitat for Humanity, etc. There are so many volunteer opportunities
to choose from. Help your community and help your college application or resume
at the same time.
Try some of these tips on your next application or resume
and see how it helps boost it with colleges and employers. One important thing
to remember though, be sure to proofread and have others proofread your applications
and resumes. It is very embarrassing to go into an interview with mistakes on
your resume and have the hiring official point them out to you. You also do not
want to get passed up for potential jobs or schools due to small mistakes.
Good luck on all the future schools and jobs you apply for!
